Yvette Cano

Director of Education, Everglades National Park

Yvette Cano has come full circle: from an enthusiastic sixth grade camper at Loop Road Camp in the Everglades, to elementary teacher bringing her students to camp, to supervisor of Everglades National Park’s Environmental Education at Loop Road.

Since a young age Yvette found her passion to be in teaching and mentoring the youth as well as the great outdoors and the national parks. She graduated from a local university with a dual degree in education and early childhood, and continued her studies in the field of science while obtaining a certificate in The Professional Forestry and Wildlife Conservation Program.

Over the past 18 years she has worked alongside educators as well as students to plan and develop both formal and informal educational opportunities. During her career she facilitated professional development, youth groups and school clubs to increase and retain the academic interest and enthusiasm of teachers and students. Her role as a teacher and leader in the environmental education community is evidenced by her numerous years of bringing students to experience the wonders of the Everglades.

In her role with the National Park Service she continues to reach out to the local community to get them excited about their National Park. She works directly with both private and public schools providing both information and education to students, teachers and administrators about the park. In working with these groups Yvette is able to generate interest in Environmental Education as well as recruits new schools to the park. Her passion, knowledge, and gift for communicating “everything Everglades” has been documented in video, newspaper articles, and awards for over a decade and brought recognition to all organizations she has served.

Yvette now proudly serves as a Park Ranger with the Environmental Education Program, overseeing and coordinating programs at the very site where she camped as a curious young student. As a matter of fact, Yvette’s first camp as a ranger, was chaperoned by young adults that she had inspired as a teacher! Yvette is truly seeing the fruits of her labor and looks forward to continuing the tradition.
